A Primer on ISO 56001 for Innovation Teams

Jul 8, 2026 7 min read

ISO 56001 is part of the ISO 56000 family of standards for innovation management systems — it sets out requirements for how an organisation identifies opportunities, manages innovation processes, and demonstrates that its innovation activity is structured rather than accidental. Unlike a one-off award or badge, it's designed to be maintained on an ongoing basis, similar in spirit to how ISO 9001 works for quality management.

For teams new to it, the standard is less about mandating a specific innovation process and more about requiring that whatever process you use is intentional, documented, and reviewed — which is a natural fit for a platform like InnoBee, where challenges, judging criteria, and outcomes are already structured and recorded by default.

Our ISO 56001 assessment module (currently in early access — see our News section) is built around this idea: rather than a separate audit-prep exercise, it treats the challenges and decisions an organisation already runs on InnoBee as the raw material for demonstrating audit readiness.
